My photographs are the real life images of the people from the streets, townships, informal settlements and squatter camps of South Africa. They are an alternative society of individuals and sub cultures that live in a world beyond the confines and grasp of regular society. They are the poor and the homeless, the street children, the criminals and the officers of the law.

I have worked within this genre of street photography and social commentary for a long time. I’ve entered and connected with this world. I know the challenge, the fear and the thrill of shooting real life images in this environment.

Now I have access and recognition in these communities as a person and as a photographer. A privilege brought about by different access points I had into this world.

- I worked in these communities and amongst these people mostly alone, driven by my own vision and passion. This allowed me to talk to ordinary people, street kids prostitutes and gangsters unchallenged

– I experienced their lives and photographed their unique situation.

-Ubuntu an internationally renowned NGO working in this field gave me great access. The time I have spent with them documenting their work gave me a perspective of hope in a situation of no hope. It gave me access to photograph feeding schemes at schools and the complex lives of orphaned child headed households and the miseries of those living with HIV.

- In 2009 I completed a photo documentary on the South African Police Dog Unit. Once again I was in the same neighborhoods seeing the same people but photographing a different perspective and presence in their lives. My focus now was that of the hardened criminal, armed robbers, murderers and drug lords

– the effect of their actions and presence in these communities and the results of their confrontation with the police. You can contact me by email if you have an interest to visit or photograph this area of our society.
